Summer is HERE, and if the most recent weather reports can be believed, it looks like it’s going to be a hot one! As the parent of a new baby, you’re still getting the hang of getting around, and worrying about keeping everyone cool doesn’t make things any easier. And what if baby hates the floppy hat, or is too little for sunscreen, or gets too sweaty in the baby carrier for comfort? Wouldn’t it be easier to just stay home?
We could never standby and leave you feeling stuck in the house all summer long- especially not after the last few years we’ve all endured. So here’s a quick list of cool, comfy places you and your little one can escape the heat this summer!
Become a library storytime regular.
Libraries are free, and cool, and most towns have at least one with regular baby and toddler storytimes. Take advantage of the luxury of having someone sing and read to baby while you get a moment to sit and connect with other parents (although you might have to clap and dance a little while you chat.) If you’re lucky enough to live in a city with more than one library, and baby enjoys storytime, you can get away with almost daily library trips that get everyone out of the house, cooled down, and reconnecting.
Live it up at an indoor playground.
Have an active toddler on your hands? Seek out an indoor playground! From Gymboree classes to Parent and Me time at your local rec center, there are a wide variety of indoor play options to take advantage of. Most require a membership fee, but if you’re staring at three months of high temps, it might be worth the investment!
Find out if nearby museums have local discount days.
If you live near major museums, it’s worth checking to see if they have local discount days. Often on a Tuesday or Wednesday, these convenient programs let local visitors in for a discounted rate - or even for free! And sure, baby probably won’t understand the nuances of World History or Modern Art just yet, but they will enjoy the motion of wandering through exhibits, the bright new colors of paintings, and the occasional kids hands-on experience. And you’ll get a break from baby books and Cocomelon to use the grown-up part of your brain! Everybody wins.
Hang out in the mall like it’s 1998.
If you’re lucky enough to have an indoor mall nearby that’s still thriving, make like it’s the 90s and go soak up that free AC. Grab a Starbucks or an Orange Julius, show baby the wonders of a department store clearance section, and share a soft pretzel while they play on the indoor playground. Window shopping is free, which makes malls a great place to log some cooldown hours outside of the house.
Catch a baby-friendly matinee.
Some movie theaters offer early, family-friendly matinees where babies, strollers, and breastfeeding are expected and encouraged. Some will even play the movie at a lower volume to protect sensitive newborn ears, but if you’re worried, bring those baby noise canceling headphones! And don’t stress if your little one doesn’t like to sit for too long - pacing in the aisles is perfectly acceptable in a room full of parents!
